Shaved Ice – September 10

MiHockey editor Michael Caples here with you on a Monday afternoon. Seems like fall is finally here, doesn’t it?

Quick hits

As of 1 p.m., Michigan Tech is in the lead for our cover voting contest. The Huskies have 20 percent of the total votes. Still time to try to have your favorite college/junior team show up on the next cover of our magazine; voting ends on Wednesday (we haven’t picked a time yet).

On Friday, Ted Lindsay and his wife made an incredibly generous donation to Beaumont to help children with autism. Such a great thing to see people using hockey – and their success in the game – to help others less fortunate. That’s what makes hockey people, in my opinion, the best people out there.

The Grand Rapids Griffins will be invading Yost on Oct. 7, as part of a rare neutral-site preseason game with the Lake Erie Monsters. Excited to have them travel to the east side of the state.

Highlight reel

It’s not all hockey, but it’s all Michigan – check out the video that highlights 50 different spots in our great state, with people singing along to “Good Time.”

Outside the Mitten

Countdown to doomsday, I mean a lockout, is on – they’ve only got until 11:59 p.m. Saturday to get this figured out.

The Panthers could be without talented defenseman Erik Gudbranson for up to four months after the sophomore-to-be underwent shoulder surgery.

Despite a lockout looming, Brad Marchant signed a new four-year extension with the Bruins.

Reports out of New Jersey say that superstar Ilya Kovalchuk is just fine after experiencing back problems during the 2012 playoffs.

Tomorrow, hockey video game enthusiasts around the world rejoice.
