Shaved Ice – March 5

Welcome back to the work week, everyone. Hope you had a great weekend.

Quick hits

Guess we might as well start at the top, and talk about the Detroit Red Wings. An afternoon tilt with rival Chicago didn’t go too well for them last night, as they lost both the game, and more players to injury. Already skating without Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk, the club lost both Jakub Kindl and Jimmy Howard in the first 20 minutes. Check out my recap from the Joe for more info on the game.

The second round of the CCHA playoffs will begin this upcoming Friday, and we finally know who will be playing. Top seed Ferris State will take on a Bowling Green squad that has already posted one upset – they topped Northern Michigan in the first round. The Michigan Wolverines face Notre Dame, a team certainly not a normal 8-seed. Western Michigan will take on Lake Superior, and Michigan State travels to Miami. We’ll have a more comprehensive preview coming soon.

And yes, we’ve got coverage of youth state title games coming your way all week.

Highlight reel

Forget about the Wings’ game on Sunday, and watch the highlights from their win on Friday. There were plenty of goals…all from the team in red.

Outside the Mitten

Detroit native David Booth had a two-goal night on Saturday, making him our Michi-gamer of the weekend.

Fun story from the OHL – Erie Otters forward Connor Crisp had to fill in between the pipes on Sunday, due to injuries to the Otters’ two netminders. He gave up 13 goals to the Niagara IceDogs, but he received a standing ovation, and was named the game’s first star.

The always-fun ‘if the NHL playoffs started today‘ scenario…

Check it out

Congrats to the Oakland Grizzlies, who are on their way to the semifinals of the ACHA D1 tournament. The club took down rival Adrian College 5-4 Sunday morning to advance to a date with Penn State tomorrow evening.

More hockey, more college previews, more youth coverage to come.
