Shaved Ice – Feb. 7

I’m running out of witty ways to say good morning.

Quick hits

Heading into their Monday night match-up with the Phoenix Coyotes, all of the focus was placed on the Red Wings’ goaltending situation due to the injury to Jimmy Howard. Who would Mike Babcock start? How would Joey MacDonald do? As it turns out, goaltending was the least of their problems. The Wings were only able to score one goal in Phoenix, a power-play goal from Johan Franzen. You can’t win many NHL games with one goal. MacDonald made 20 saves, but allowed two goals. The Coyotes added an empty-netter at the end to give them a 3-1 win.

Highlight reel

Since you probably don’t want to see the highlights of the Wings game, here’s a quick clip of Livonia native Torey Krug in the Spartans’ skills competition yesterday. I’ve never seen this shootout move before, but I like it.

Outside the Mitten

Speaking of Spartans, Jeff Petry is our Michi-gamer of the night. The Farmington Hills native posted a goal and an assist for the Oilers last night. Read more about it right here.

Mooooooore trade rumors can be found in the link just a few words back.

NHL.com says the Wings could be a major player at the trade deadline. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ken Holland makes only minor tweaks – or no tweaks at all.

Check it out

Are the Coyotes moving to Seattle? Is there ever going to be a time where there aren’t relocation rumors about the Coyotes might be the better question, really.

Next up

I’ll come up with something for you tomorrow morning. Promise.
