Shaved Ice – Feb. 27

I made the executive decision today to hold on off Shaved Ice until the conclusion of the NHL trade deadline. I get to do that, I’m the guy in the photo. So here’s the summary of the not-so-crazy day, and the weekend in general.

Quick hits

The Red Wings jettisoned a member of their current roster, without making any other additions. The club traded away Mike Commodore, who, let’s face it, wasn’t really fitting in this season. Of course, they added Kyle Quincey last week, so they still have enough defense to spread around.

Detroit also called up Brendan Smith today. Ironically, we were posting a feature about him right when the news broke – check it out here. Smith will be filling in for Jonathan Ericsson, who is out for a month with a fractured wrist.

The CCHA regular season has come to an end. Here’s what happened Friday, and here’s what happened Saturday. The playoffs start this weekend, with Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State the two Michigan schools without byes into the quarterfinals. We’ll have more coming about the CCHA playoffs real soon.

Highlight reel

Here’s a look at the Spartans’ win on Saturday night.

And obviously we can’t share the Michigan State highlights without posting the Michigan ones, so here’s a look at the Wolverines’ final regular-season game as well.

Outside the Mitten

Speaking of Spartans…Ryan Miller is our Michi-gamer of the weekend after helping the Buffalo Sabres top the Boston Bruins.

The biggest name on the trading block, Rick Nash, will be staying in Columbus.

Former Wolverines star Steve Kampfer has been traded to the Minnesota Wild, moving him just a little closer to his home state.

Flint native Brian Rolston will be joining forces with Tim Thomas – Rolston was traded to Boston this afternoon.

Marysville native Dalton Young drew comparisons to Nicklas Lidstrom when the Spirit signed him last year. Read more about the standout defenseman here.

We’ll be back with some more hockey for everybody tomorrow. Promise.
