Shaved Ice – Feb. 10

As you may have noticed, yesterday’s Shaved Ice post missed the bus. However, that was because we were just slightly busy covering a certain press conference (or two) about a certain outdoor hockey event coming to Michigan…

Quick hits

Hopefully by now you’ve seen our article yesterday about the official announcement – the NHL Winter Classic is coming to Hockeytown. And what’s even better than a game between the Red Wings and the Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium in front of 100,000+ fans? Weeks of outdoor hockey beforehand at Comerica Park in Detroit. Our state is going to be buzzing with hockey events in 2012 and the first day of 2013, and we here at Michigan Hockey are ecstatic, and can’t wait to bring you ALL the coverage of the outdoor events.

We’ve been having some great interaction with fans on our Facebook and Twitter pages about the upcoming outdoor games – join in the fun!

But don’t forget, there’s hockey going on indoors this weekend…in fact, there’s lots of indoor hockey going on this weekend. Along with the Red Wings taking on the Ducks tonight, the Spartans and Wolverines clash in East Lansing. It’s the fourth meeting between the two in-state rivals. On Dec. 9, the Wolverines topped the Spartans 4-3. MSU responded with a shootout victory the next night (shows up in the NCAA standings as a tie, though). Then, in the Great Lakes Invitational finals, UM prevailed in overtime, 3-2. We will be at Munn tonight, and then at the Joe tomorrow, for what is sure to be two great games between opponents who don’t exactly get along.

Highlight reel

Well if this doesn’t get you fired up for the Big Game at the Big House, I don’t know what will.

Outside the Mitten

Max Pacioretty posted his first career hat trick last night. Think that’s good enough to make him our Michi-gamer of the night. Check it out here.

Doesn’t sound like Steve Yzerman will be playing in the NHL Winter Classic Alumni Game. Somebody change his mind, please.

More and more NHL trade rumors. Always left wondering how some of these even start.

Don’t worry, we’ll be all over the MSU/UM series this weekend. Keep an eye on our site and our social media pages for plenty of Spartans vs. Wolverines coverage.
