Shaved Ice – Dec. 7

Good morning, hockey people.

Quick hits

Looks like the Red Wings are finally slowing down a bit. After that impressive seven-game win streak, Detroit has now dropped two straight, after losing 3-2 to St. Louis last night. Goals from Johan Franzen and Jiri Hudler weren’t enough for the Wings, who are now 16-9-1, and tied with three other NHL teams with 33 points.

Michigan State announced the signings of three more players to their recruiting class. Farmington Hills native and Detroit Catholic Central grad Ryan Keller joins the Spartans’ class, which is now at six players.

Congrats go out to former Plymouth Whalers goaltender Matt Hackett, who played in his first NHL game last night – and posted a shut out. Hackett replaced Minnesota Wild starter Josh Harding 1:11 into the game, and stopped all 34 shots he faced, to lead the Wild to a 2-1 win over San Jose.

It’s rivalry week. Get fired up for it with one of the most iconic moments between the Spartans and Wolverines.

Outside the Mitten

Hackett had a huge game yesterday, but we still picked UM alum Brendan Morrison as our Michi-gamer of the night. Read about why, and if you would rather see Hackett there, tell us why!

We’ve launched a new blog for our favorite Fox Sports Detroit TV analyst – Darren Eliot. In his first posting for ‘Special DElivery’, DE discusses the NHL realignment.

As noted by the video, we’re inching closer to a huge weekend between Michigan and Michigan State. We’ll keep you posted on that, along with everything else hockey in the Mitten. Have a great day.
